Located in Boston, Flavin Architects has worked on a three-story addition to a house in Massachusetts in order to add a space for the inhabitants’ leisure activities.

The studio created the addition for the couple who lives in the house for them to focus on the activities they love such as gardening or antique restoration.

The structure lays upon a concrete base in stucco, and presents a steel frame supporting the upper floors.

Privacy and ventilation are provided thanks to mahogany boards serving as walls. When turning the lights on you can see the building light up like a lantern, hence the name Modern Lantern Studio.

The addition presents several spaces for different activities: you can find an outdoor living room or a writer’s studio which sees a floor-to-ceiling glass wall and access to a small terrace.
